Did you know that Toronto City Council declared a climate emergency in October 2019 and that Toronto has a climate action strategy called TransformTO?
For those who are interested, I will be hosting a virtual community discussion on “TransformTO: Getting TO Net Zero” on WED JULY 21 6:30pm-8:00pm since the City is asking for feedback from residents on its climate action strategy.
This is an opportunity for us to learn about TransformTO and contribute our thoughts on the City of Toronto’s short-term priority actions to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while improving our health, advancing social equity, growing our economy, and improving climate resilience.
TransformTO includes short-term goals of reducing our GHG emissions by 65% from 1990 levels by 2030, a key milestone on the path to achieving net zero by 2050. Did you know that Toronto has already reduced its GHG emissions by 40% from 1990 levels? We need to act urgently to continue on this path to decarbonizing our city by changing how we build, move, generate energy and dispose of our waste.
What are the relative contributions of various sectors to GHG emissions in Toronto? According to the latest inventory from 2018, buildings contribute 55% of GHG emissions, transportation contributes 36%, and waste contributes 9%. During the virtual community discussion on WED JULY 21, we will be learning about, discussing, and prioritizing the various climate actions relating to the largest sources of local GHG emissions as well as looking at actions for enhancing greenspaces and promoting informed decision-making & equitable engagement.
If you would like to attend this virtual community discussion, please RSVP by email at climatejusticefitness@gmail.com so that I can send you the Zoom invite link to the meeting I’ll be hosting on WED JULY 21 6:30pm-8:00pm. In the mean time, you can read the City of Toronto’s backgrounder document to learn more about the City’s climate action strategy and you can watch the TransformTO: Getting TO Net Zero video.
For additional climate action inspiration, I invite you to visit my Activations page to read about and view a 6min, mindful, climate-aware fitness practice video. Why not try this Embodied Climate Justice Fitness (ECJF) activation practice for yourself, making any modifications to make it work for your body? We will be taking an ECJF movement break during the virtual community discussion!
If you are unable to attend this virtual community discussion but would like to provide your feedback to the City of Toronto, there is a survey that you can complete at your convenience before the City’s consultation period ends on Monday, July 26. Update: the consultation period has been extended to Wednesday, August 4.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I hope to see you on WED JULY 21!
